Update: Leafs Representing at 2011 IIHF World Championships

TORONTO– The preliminary rounds at the 2011 World Hockey Championships are shaping up the way team Canada and its Toronto Maple Leafs representatives would have hoped, with the team 2-0 and a chance to clinch first place in Group B Tuesday versus Switzerland.

Canada opened the tournament on Friday with a 4-1 victory over Belarus. They followed that up on Sunday with a 9-1 trouncing of France.

Leafs players making an impact for Canada are D Luke Schenn who has one assist and is plus two. D Dion Phaneuf has Three assists and is

plus 1 with six penalty minutes while first time Team Canada member G James Reimer is 2-0 with a 1.1.3 GAA and a .957 SV%.

Eight other Leafs are representing their home countries including F Mikhail Grabovski (Belarus), D Korbinian Holzer and F Marcel Mueller (Germany), Nikolai Kulemin (Russia), Carl Gunnarsson (Sweden), D Mike Komisarek, D Jake Gardiner and F Mike Brown (USA).

Other than Gardiner, every Leaf has seen action through two games. Here is how they look statistically:

Grabovski was named team captain for Belarus while Phaneuf is playing as the alternate captain for Canada.

Leafs’ GM and President Brian Burke is also part of the tournament, serving as part of the U.S. Men’s National Team Advisory Group. Toronto Marlies GM, David Nonis, is serving as Team Canada’s GM.
