TORONTO– In his first appearance on a “conditioning stint,” G Jonas Gustavsson turned aside 24 shots and led the Toronto Marlies to a 3-1 victory over the Rochester Americans (Florida affiliate.)
Saturday’s game in Rochester, was the first time since January 19ththat Gustavsson has started between the pipes. His solid performance earned him the first star of the game and perhaps
some of the confidence he showed earlier in the season. Before being sent to the Marlies, Gustavsson’s numbers this season with the Leafs were 6-13-2 in 22 games, with a 3.29 GAA and an .890SV%.
Speculation of Gustavsson being sent down to the Marlies came out when the Leafs decided to keep G James Reimer through the NHL All-Star break. His demotion was held off until Friday however, which made sense considering the Marlies were off a full seven days leading up to their match with the Americans.
The win was important for Toronto who came into the game with a 1-3-0-1 record against Rochester and 9-16-0-4 against their division.
To make room for Jonas Gustavsson, G Ben Scrivens was sent back to the Reading Royals of the ECHL. In his return, he stopped 50 shots and earned a 4-2 win over the Trenton Devils
Next up for the Marlies will be a home game this Wednesday at 11am when they square off against the Connecticut Whale (NY Rangers affiliate.)
