Weekend Recap: Marlies Drop Back to Back Meetings Against Lake Erie Monsters

TORONTO- Starting off a nine game road trip with back to back games against the Lake Erie Monsters seemed like an advantage to team captain Ryan Hamilton.

“You’re ready, you know the faces,” said Hamilton. “You build a rivalry. We’ve had some physical games with them already and I know they want to get going in the standings.”

Unfortunately for the Marlies, the Monsters did pick up points in the standings as they won both games this past weekend.

On Saturday, Justin Mercier set-up both Lake Erie goals as they beat Toronto 2-1.

Brad Malone and Eric Hunter each scored their first goal of the season for the Monsters.

Joe Colborne scored the lone goal for the Marlies.

Trevor Cann made 31 saves for the victory while Jussi Rynnas stopped 31 shots in defeat.

Lake Erie went 0-for-2 on the power play as Toronto was unable to score on seven power-play opportunities.

On Sunday, Cedrick Desjardins made his season debut and turned aside all 29 shots he faced as the Monsters shutout the Marlies 4-0.

Luke Walker, Evan Brophey, Stefan Elliott and Hunter each scored for Lake Erie.

Rynnas made 25 saves but took his third loss of the season.

Toronto had another bad special team’s game as they went 0-for-7 on the power play and gave up two power-play goals.

“You can’t think too much,” said Rynnas about how he prepared for Lake Erie. “You just have to go in there and play your own game.”

Colborne, who scored the only goal all weekend for Toronto, gave most the credit to his line-mates efforts.

“They’re giving me a lot of confidence and a chance to go out there and be successful,” he said about Jerry D’Amigo and Joey Crabb.

Although it’s still early in the season, Hamilton knew that the two game series would be big down the stretch in terms of North division standings.

“We know they have a good team,” he said. “We want to get as many points as possible against these guys.”

The Marlies are now 2-3 against Lake Erie with three more meetings coming later in the season.

Next up for Toronto is the Texas Stars. They will meet Thursday night at 8:30pm.

Weekend Recap: Marlies Earn Three of a Possible Four Points, Stay Atop the North Division

TORONTO- The top line of Jerry D’Amigo, Joe Colborne and Joey Crabb led the way for the Toronto Marlies as they earned three of a possible four points in back to back games this past weekend.

“They’re a good line,” said head coach Dallas Eakins. “Jerry does a lot of the hard work and takes pucks to the net. Joe (Colborne) has the ability to set someone up or score one himself; and he uses his huge wingspan. “I haven’t seen all the teams yet but if there’s a better forward in the American Hockey League then Joey Crabb, please show me him.”

Captain Ryan Hamilton has been just as impressed with the trio.

“Crabby, Colborne and Jerry have been real good for us every game.”

Saturday the Marlies hosted the Rochester Americans and needed an overtime goal from Colborne for the 5-4 victory.

Crabb, Kelsey Wilson, Hamilton and Darryl Boyce each scored singles for the Marlies.

Derek Whitmore led the way for the Americans scoring two goals while Corey Tropp and Jacob Lagace rounded out the scoring.

The Marlies were down 4-2 late in the third period but a delay of game penalty by Rochester’s Joe Finley gave the Marlies the opportunity they needed.

At 18:27, Hamilton cut the lead in half with a power-play goal and 34 seconds later Boyce tied the game to force overtime.

Ben Scrivens made 23 saves for his third victory of the season and at the other end of the rink, David Leggio turned aside 26 shots in a losing cause.

On Sunday the Marlies hosted the Lake Erie Monsters and again needed overtime to decide an outcome.

However, this time the visitor’s went away with the victory when Tyson Barrie scored his second goal of the game to give the Monsters a 5-4 victory.

Also scoring for Lake Erie were David Liffiton, David van der Gulik and Evan Brophey.

Crabb led the way for Toronto with two goals and an assist while Mike Zigomanis and Colborne scored singles.

The Marlies were down 3-1 entering the third period but Colborne scored just 22 seconds into the frame and Crabb scored twice to give Toronto a 4-3 lead.

The lead didn’t last long as Brophey scored just seven seconds after Crabb to tie the game at four.

Trevor Cann made 24 saves for the victory while Jussi Rynnas took the loss, making 27 saves.

Up next for the Marlies will be the Abbotsford Heat, who they will host this Wednesday at 7pm.

It will be the team’s last home game until November 19th as they will head out for a nine game road trip.

Worth Noting

  • With affiliation changes over the summer, this year’s Americans roster is last year’s Portland Pirates
  • After killing off 19 straight penalties through their first five games, the Marlies gave up three power-play goals in loss to the Monsters
  • Jeff Finger sat out Sunday’s game as Eakins rested him; noting that the season is long and the staff just wanted to be safe at this point of the season
  • Josh Engel made his season debut against the Monsters
  • Colborne and Crabb are tied for second in AHL scoring
  • Marlies lead the North Division in scoring with 23 goals.
